Kelsey Lu - I’m Not In Love
When it comes to music, I am a very much sonically inclined person.
There are very few covers of songs that I feel spin a record in a direction that completely puts the original into a whole different shelf. Natanya’s Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes cover of The Korgis is another good example for this. Kelsey Lu having a classical background takes I’m Not In Love by 10cc into an insane direction production wise that just makes it a must hear.
As said I rarely listen to lyrics in songs but the way Eric Stewart handles the topic of avoidance of the confrontations of a relationship has rung through for me and some of my counterparts throughout my life. I keep coming back to this song, whether I want to or not.
PARTYNEXTDOOR - Joy
Another sonically insane song produced by 40 (Noah Shebib), it uses explosive drums over Jarohn's explosive vocals. I’ve been getting into Party lately. He has written so many good songs. Belong to the City is another top contender. But this one sticks out to me. The production is very un-Party-like. A lot softer. But this allows for a more focused approach on the topic at hand. I can definitely empathize with it. In life I want Joy.
Oklou - obvious
Also an insane sound hailing from Paris. A friend tried to put me on to her through her last album. I missed it. Only recently found way to her music through this song on Twitter. Randomly saw this girl I know in her video “Calamity.ami” and the prod is madness. Downloaded both of her albums on my iPod and running them as a daily at the moment.
Mikano - Overthinking
Meeting Mikano at the Bottega Afterparty in Paris just about a year ago was a godsend message. Guy just holds pure ass energy and it shows in the songs and lyrics he writes. Many wisdoms and a lot to learn through his lyrics; a big one is that positivity is often reciprocated. Definitely keep an I out for this one. So much unreleased fire in the vault.
Childish Gambino - III. Telegraph Ave.
This track is on “because the internet.”. I vividly remember this album coming out as a kid. This is where I learned what a release can be. Donald Glover not only made two short-films but had released a script and two accompanying EPs along with music videos, which all created a narrative world. We are in a day and age at which attention spans are shortening out, Albums are dying and media is becoming fast food. Its good to look back at a time where music could reach farther than only the medium of sound. I believe that this is still very much possible today though.
