Following the release of her latest single 'Get In The Car', we caught up with Spanish/American artist Fire Affair to find out what influences her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Fire Affair's picks be sure to check out 'Get In The Car' at the end of the article.
1. Empress Of - Water Water
"I discovered Empress Of when I had just started producing. I was doing electronic music back then and this track put me in a choke-hold. Such a bop. Lorely Rodriguez is an incredibly talented music producer and singer songwriter. Her body of work is so rich. One of those “favorite artist’s favorite artist” moments that Chappell Roan coined, for sure."
2. Muse - Knights of Cydonia
"The production of this song is epic. I love music that you can visualize. The drums are sick, the structure is insane, I love how it builds up and breaks down, it’s one of those tracks for music producers and songwriters alike to study and dissect. It has that rock opera vibe that was characteristic of the era. It’s crazy to think that there was so much epic music like this being produced back then. I mean, a 2:06 minute intro? Most people don’t have the patience to craft such intricate music anymore, let alone listen to it lol. Muse’s use of harmonies has always been exquisite. The layers upon layers of vocals… I’d love to see the FX chain for Matt Belamy’s vocals on this track."
3. Nina Simone - Sinnerman
"Pulling from the same idea of music and imagery. How to make instruments sound like other things. The piano arrangement in this adaptation is a train on the tracks or a runaway car, a great escape. Paired with Nina Simone’s raw performance and the deep rooted meaning behind the lyrics, this song awakens something inside of me, rage, fear, adrenaline, yearning."
4. The Kills - No Wow
"The Kills are in a league of their own. I’ve always admired and looked up to Alison Mosshart, she’s an incredible artist. I remember first hearing this track as a kid and my jaw dropping. No one was doing what they were doing at the time, they were decades ahead of their time. True innovators. The whole idea of using music as building blocks. Making loops and then building a song from said loops, the concept of live looping that was brought to mainstream by artists like Ed Sheeran… that was years after The Kills or Imogean Heap… they were pioneers in this style of music composition and performance. They’re so loud and so tight. It’s astonishing what they were able to accomplish in their earlier work with a few layers of guitars and a drum machine."
5. Santigold - Disparate Youth
"A teacher introduced me to Santigold when I was studying sound engineering and it was all I wanted to listen to for the better part of 6 months. Everything is placed so carefully as the song builds up element by element. It’s the same 3 chords over and over for most of the song but you wouldn’t notice because it’s structurally brilliant. Santigold has always been a master at constructing songs. Her use of synths is always delightful. She’s an expert at the art of earworms."
