Following the release of her latest single 'Just For One Night', Flex caught up with New York Pop-Rock artist Jess Yaffa to find out more about what influences her eclectic sound, if you enjoy Jaffa's picks be sure to check out 'Just For One Night' at the end of the article.
1. Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry
I’ve been an Amy Winehouse fan for as long as I can remember. She’s influenced me and my music in so many ways and this version of Tears Dry is such a testament to her talent and emotion. I love walking around NYC, listening to this song and seeing all of the leaves change for fall.
2. Bleachers - Everybody Lost Somebody
People who know me know that I’ve burned through the bleachers catalogue more times than I can count. So when I saw them play at Madison Square Garden recently I didn’t think anything would stand out to me in a different way until they played this song. It felt warm and communal and the energy in the room was so high that I’ve been listening to this song to remind me of it.
3. Tyler, The Creator (feat. DOECHII) - Balloon
This album is SO GOOD. I am a huge Tyler fan and I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head since it came out. DOECHII is the coolest and I love her sound so this collaboration is one of my favorites.
4. RAYE - Oscar Winning Tears - live at the Royal Albert Hall
I wish that I could’ve been in this crowd when she sang this because it just seemed like a true special moment and you can hear that through this song. RAYE is a big influence for me and her talent as a songwriter and a musician is palpable in everything she does. I love listening to this on my commute home from work and I can just be in the moment.
5. Alabama Shakes - Always Alright
This is undoubtedly my most played song of all time. I don’t know if it’s the guitar or Brittany’s voice but I can listen to this song three times a day and never get sick of it. It immediately puts me in a better mood and makes me just want to dance it out.
