Following the release of Julia Powell's sassy new song 'Sugar', the up and coming alt-pop artist talks us through 5 songs she thinks are sweet:
1. La Malinche - Feu! Chatterton
I. Love. French music. And the energy of this song is amazing. I gear towards music that's driving and cinematic, so this song hits every mark for me. I first found Feu! Chatteron because apple music randomly suggested them to me, and thank the universe for that algorithm because now they're one of my favorite bands. The song is so well written that it doesn't matter that I have no idea what he's saying. The song gets the feelings it evokes across without even needing the lyrics, and that's a pretty impressive musical feat.
2. Lizzo - Truth Hurts
I mean do I even need to explain this one? She's amazing. Her lyrics are amazing. Everything she stands for is beautiful and she's done more for the face of pop music than most artists could even dream of. I have listened to this song at least once a day since I first heard it, and it doesn't look like I'll be stopping any time soon. The beat is great and her unapologetic lyrics give me life.
3. Modern Day Cain - I Don't Know How But They Found Me
Another one of my all-time favorite bands. Honestly, I could have put any song by them on here, but this is the first song that I heard from them and I still love it just as much to this day. Their writing is just so damn good. Every element of the song works together and Dallon Weeks's vocals are top-notch. They always have crazy attention to detail in their productions, and their videos always have a cool 80's vibe. I aspire to be this good.
4.Living Fiction - WHITE
An absolute banger. I love this band and I'm so sad that they're not active anymore. I'm a big fan of 80's music and they did that style so well. I love the emotions that this song evokes, It feels nostalgic and self-reflective, and like I said with some of the previous songs on this list, the writing is just really good. I love songs that have good dynamics, cool bridges, switch up the choruses etc. This song does all of that in one, plus there's a sax solo... so I mean come on, who doesn't love that?
5. Cavaliers - Mansfield.TYA
Another french band I'm currently obsessed with, this song makes me feel like I'm going on a journey. I don't know if it's been placed in any movies but it totally should be. The strings that come in around the halfway mark are amazing. This was another Apple Music recommendation and I'm so glad I found it.
