Last week, Chicago-based Khaliyah X released her latest single, "PSA (ft. Kayo)." The fun, lightweight r&b track is perfect for warmer weather, and expands on the songwriter's acclaimed discography. With some verses from rapper Kayo, "PSA" is infused with all of the good vibes that self-love can bring. Khaliyah bends genres in a way that only she can, infusing the inspiration of her favorite Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop, House, and Pop artists.
We sat down with Khaliyah X to discuss her influences and what she's been listening to lately!
"When You Touch Me" - Brandy
"You can’t mention R&B without Brandy. First of all, if I were to model my career after someone from her younger years, it would definitely be Brandy. She had it all: television presence, her own line of dolls, exceptional vocals, and even Broadway performances. I admire her tonality and vocal prowess immensely. Constantly studying her harmonies and musical ear has been a significant influence on me. Many people have commented on the harmonies in my music, particularly in 'PSA' and some of my other works, and honestly, Brandy is the reason I'm so passionate about vocal production. This album is one of my all-time favorites. Plus, learning that this song was produced by the legendary Babyface? Are you kidding me? It's a dream come true. My absolute favorite part of this song is the bridge—I just love a well-crafted bridge."
2. "A long Walk" - Jill Scot
"I'm definitely a Neo-soul baby through and through. My mom constantly had Neo-Soul playing throughout the house. Jill Scott is a huge inspiration for me when it comes to my writing. She has a unique way of storytelling through her music, and I'm particularly drawn to her boldness and willingness to use curse words in a poetic manner. Jill's style heavily influences my own writing; the way she paints a picture and sets the vibe in her songs always makes me want to take a leisurely walk and just vibe out. I aspire to create music that resonates with people in the same way Jill's does. I absolutely adore her."
3. "Sorry" - Beyoncé
"Of course, I have to give a shoutout to the QUEEN. This song is a true anthem for women. It's infectious, with its lively rhythm, catchy melody, and most importantly, it's not tailored to male audiences. What resonates with me the most is its message of reclaiming power and embracing freedom as a woman. I absolutely love it when she’s in 'Cocky Beyoncé' mode, and 'Lemonade' stands as my favorite album of hers. This track, in particular, never fails to make me want to hit the dance floor. My aspiration is to create music that moves people, transcending genres just like she does here. There's something empowering about feeling unapologetic, because, well, I AIN’T SORRY!"
4. "Die a little Bit" - Tinashe
"Tinashe is definitely one of my favorite Alt-R&B-Pop artists; I'm a huge fan of hers. This song, in particular, carries a strong influence of house music. Being from Chicago, house music runs deep in my veins. It's truly remarkable to see how house originated here and has now spread worldwide. What stands out to me in this song is how her vocals are seamlessly woven in, much like how DJs mix vocals in house tracks. It takes me back to summer house parties here in Chicago, serving as yet another wellspring of inspiration for me. I just can't get enough of it. The themes of freedom, fun, sexuality, and letting go are also just universally great topics. With spring finally here, I find myself yearning for that feeling of liberation, and this song always puts me in a good energy."
5. "Private Party" - India Arie
"India holds a special place in my heart as an artist because she was one of the first musicians I ever listened to who openly sang about spirituality, self-love, self-affirmation, and the experiences of being a black girl navigating life, grief, and self-discovery. Her influence steers the positive direction of my music. During puberty, her songs were like therapeutic journaling sessions for me. She sparked my interest in crystals and inspired me to start playing guitar. My inner child owes everything to India. 'Private Party' is my go-to mantra whenever I need a pick-me-up or to reconnect with myself."
"PSA (ft. Kayo)" is available across streaming platforms.
