5 Songs I Love W/ LAY / BYE

Cambridge indie-rockers LAY / BYE have just released the radiant new single ‘Love Songs Are Boring <3’, a track which brings satirical lyricism and highlights the band's ability to move between the alternative rock of previous releases and a more indie-pop influenced soundscape. The track made us wonder what sounds inspire the band, what artists they have been listening to.

Over to LAY / BYE to offer a little insight:

We tried to make this fun and put them into categories. 2 Band Classics We All Love:

This Charming Man - The Smiths

We weren’t even born when this song came out but it is a classic for us. Everyone loves this song, we’ve seen Johnny Marr a few times and screaming along to this song in a crowd is incredibly fun. The instrumentals of any Smiths song is incredible and I remember us all being crazy excited for his gigs.

Heavy - Black Honey

Black Honey are one of the coolest bands going! Heavy is high energy, full of riffs and cool guitar effects. Combine this with Izzy’s unique vocal and the entire song is in our minds one of the best songs of 2023.

Up and coming:

Purple - Wunderhorse

When it comes to bands that should be way bigger than they are Wunderhorse are top of our list. Purple is one of those songs where it’s unexplainable but you just get goosebumps when listening to it and that almost childlike feeling of listening to songs for the first time and just feeling happy comes flooding back.

Influential:

M.O.N.EY. - The 1975

This band influenced us more when we were younger but were probably the first band we looked at and thought ’now that’s a band and that’s how it should be done’. Probably the first band we fell in love with and M.O.N.E.Y. is such a good song both live and on record in terms of guitar sound, production and writing.

Currently Listening:

Taste - Sabrina Carpenter

Bit of a weird one and out of character with the rest but it’s just a banger. The funky guitar mixed with the pulsating beat is class, who doesn’t love a good pop song?
