5 Songs I Love w/ Lizzy Paris

Lizzy Paris has recently shared her new soul-pop single 'Crash n' Burn'. The joyous offering is made up of warm and uplifting instrumentation alongside Lizzy's silky-smooth vocals. A mix of genres and influences can be heard on 'Crash n' Burn', so we caught up with Lizzy to find out more about the music she loves and why. If you're a fan of the tracks below, be sure to check out 'Crash n' Burn' and follow Lizzy for more!

1. Nelly Furtado - I’m Like a Bird

This song holds such a special place in my heart. Whoa nelly! was one of the first albums I remember going to Circuit City and buying with my own money. I recall listening to it from front to back and singing along to the songs that I already knew because of TRL. Nelly was so new and fresh to me I just couldn't get enough. Divinely, I ended up meeting her 7 or so years later and I told her how much she meant to me. Oh music, how I love you so hehe

2. Aretha Franklin - Respect

To be frank, I'm truly indebted to this record. It's the sheer reason I'm even here now giving you my favorite 5 songs. This record was the first song I ever sang out loud to anyone besides myself. I was 10 and I brought my mother and sister to tears with my rendition. Ever since, I've been singing loudly and freely. Aretha Franklin was my Auntie Barbara's favorite artist of all time as well so she always ran very deep in my family's household. Aretha guided me to my voice and for that I'm forever grateful for the Queen of Soul. My full circle moment came when I saw her perform live on her last tour before she passed. Talk about perfect timing.

3. A Tribe Called Quest - Jazz (We've Got)

There's nothing more satisfying than the seamless blend of hip-hop and jazz. Add A Tribe Called Quest and you've got yourself a match made in heaven. I'm such a fan of 90s hip-hop. It got me through college. No seriously. Oddly enough it kept me focused. This song in particular stretched my creativity in such a way that I haven't been the same since. It's everything that is glorious about hip-hop. *cue the sax line*

4. Lenny Kravitz - I Belong to You

I really need you to feel me on this one so let me just paint the picture for you. It's 1999 and you just bought Totally Hits 4 from Best Buy. You have your CD player with you so you open the package and slide it in... turn to track 8 and turn the volume all the way up. Nothing else matters but that soft body/hip roll and the feeling of the wind on your face as you dance the day away.

5. Nancy Wilson - Guess Who I Saw Today

As a songwriter, there are certain songs that you hear that make you wish you wrote it. Well this is one of them for me. Talk about wit, cleverness and sass packaged in the prettiest bows of all, the great Nancy Wilson. I love to sing it at the top of my lungs when no one is home. Do yourself a favor, go to YouTube and watch her perform this live. You'll be changed for the better.
