Following the release of her debut single 'Shade Of Red', Flex caught up with Liverpool-based artist Olivia Frances Brown to find out more about what influences her eclectic sound, if you enjoy Olivia's picks be sure to check out 'Shade Of Red' at the end of the article.
1. Reckoner - Radiohead
I just love this. I could listen to it for hours on end. Correction have listened to it for hours on end. Many times. It just makes me feel something every time I listen to it.
2. 6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps
I first heard this when I was about 6. It was on a CD that came free with a newspaper (remember when they used to this!) and I remember sitting on the kitchen worktop listening to it over and over again on my mums stereo. I was just a kid but I thought it was extremely cool. It’s really moody and I always find myself coming back to it. The lyrics “don’t think cause I understand I care, don’t think cause I’m talking we’re friends” really struck a chord with 6 year old me. I was a deep kid.
3. Video Games - Lana del Rey
This song came out at a memorable time in my life and I remember just being in awe of the production on it. Lana was doing something completely different to anyone else at the time and she soon became a massive inspiration to me. The song is magical and everytime I listen to it, it manages to take me back to that exact moment of being 16 just having left school driving round aimlessly in my boyfriend’s car.
4. Lilac Wine - Nina Simone
Any Nina Simone song really. Her version of this is incredible though. I love her. She’s also a massive inspiration.
5. All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun - Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser
This one’s emotional. It’s so raw - the way it was recorded and was never meant to be heard. I don’t even think they liked their performances on this but their voices sit so perfectly together. Makes me feel hopeful when I listen.
