5 Songs I Love w/ Roy Lucian Baza

Roy Lucian Baza's new single 'Finally Me' is a luscious alt-pop anthem that speaks to his favourite influences of The Weeknd, Bruno Mars and even Michael Jackson in places. It embodies the joy and emotion of self-realisation, showcasing Roy's distinct voice and sound. So, we wanted to learn all about Roy's 5 favourite songs he's digging right now, exclusively for FLEX!

1. Stevie Wonder - I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)

I always thought this song was perfectly written. The way Mr. Wonder wrote this heartbreaking hopeful love song is so uplifting. As a fellow hopeless romantic, his description of love is how I view it as well. “I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever”. Chills. That line will forever stick with me. Also “Talking Book” is one of the best albums of all time. Stevie Wonder was in his bag when making this masterpiece.

2. Miley Cyrus - Malibu

This song. THIS SONG. I’ve made it pretty clear that Miley is one of my biggest inspirations and musical heroes. I got into songwriting when I was 12 years old because of her. Her poetic view of Malibu as a place and as a metaphor changed my life. I became a better writer because of this song. Malibu will forever be my northstar. And considering I call Malibu, California, my part time home now, it’s even more special to me.

3. Michael Jackson - You Rock My World

Choosing my favourite Michael song is so difficult because my whole top 5 would be dominated by them. But at this moment right now I have to go with “You Rock My World”. It’s no secret MJ is my everything, my inspiration, my musical hero. I love Michael’s tone within this song, it’s so warm and inviting. It’s cheeky and fun. Plus I believe this song is not loved enough, it deserved more. I listened to this song a lot while making my new album “Loverboy Lucian” out May 10th. I thought a lot about it when we recorded “On Call”, a new song from that album.

4. Aretha Franklin - Ain't No Way

I grew up on the greats and I fell in love with this song in my early teens. I always dreamed of writing these big soulful love ballads like “Ain't No Way”. As I got older and started experiencing love for myself, I really related to Ain’t No Way. I owe a lot of my artistry to Ms. Franklin and this masterpiece of a song. My songs “Closed Doors” from my first album “Roy” and “Loverboy” from my new album “Loverboy Lucian” would not exist without the template she laid out within her iconic work.

5. Dominic Fike - Bodies

I wanted to include one modern song here. So I had to include Dom on this list. “Sunburn” was my favorite album from 2023. I think this man is so fire. From his looks, to his fashion, and his overall vibe. He exudes IT BOY. This song is beyond catchy and I find myself singing it everyday throughout the day. I also think Dom is so underrated, so please put some respect on his name please! Like he says in the song, HALLELUJAH!!
