5 Songs I Love w/ Split Second

Following the release of their latest single 'Ozymandias', we caught up with UK Indie-Pop band Split Second to find out more about what influences their eclectic sound. If you enjoy Split Second's picks be sure to check out 'Ozymandias' at the end of the article.

1. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

"The Chain" was the first song we played as a band at a small gig organized by our music teacher when we just 14 years old! It became our opening song for every gig until we introduced our own original tracks some years on. They're our "go to" group if asked, who do we sound like? - the music, the lyrics and the voices of Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks. "The Chain" specifically is a masterclass in musical dynamics and raw emotion, which has influenced how we think about building momentum and crafting intensity in our own songs - very often you'll hear a break in our tracks and a change of gear, all stemming from "The Chain".

2. Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger

Our songs are written by our guitarist, Levi who bases his guitar sound around Oasis and the Chilli Peppers.

This song embodies the spirit of moving forward without regrets, which resonates deeply with us as a band. The anthemic quality of the chorus and the message of resilience have been a huge inspiration when writing our own music, pushing us to look beyond setbacks.

3. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The blend of storytelling and atmosphere in "Californication" inspires us to dive deep into the narratives in our music. We've not nearly achieved anything like what the Chilli Peppers do in this track but it gives something to aim at!

4. R U Mine? - Arctic Monkeys

This song’s energy and swagger are contagious. Arctic Monkeys bring a modern edge to rock that we aim to channel in our own music. The driving riffs and sharp lyricism keep us hooked and inspire us to write music that feels bold and unapologetic. Love how their northern accents bring character, depth and a rawness and an imperfection to their tracks - would be so much different if Taylor Swift were singing!!!

5. Dignity - Deacon Blue

"Dignity" is a song about hope and perseverance, and it reminds us of the importance of staying grounded while chasing dreams. Its uplifting yet introspective nature influences us to create music that resonates with listeners on a personal level. Similarly to Californication and like most Deacon Blue tracks, "Dignity" uses storytelling that gets into your soul - we've attempted to do this with "Ozymandias" and through the narrative of the "Love Life Cycle" album due for release.
