Italian singer songwriter and artist Alessia Labate is taking the dance and pop scene by storm. Following the release of her brand new track 'You're My Next Ex' we caught up with the artist to find out a little more about the music that inspires her. If you're a fan of the tracks below be sure to check out Alessia's new release and her upcoming EP 'YMNE' out on November 26th.
1. Tove Lo - shedontknowbutsheknows
When I discovered Tove Lo in 2015 it all started to make sense to me: she's been my number one inspiration for many years as I'm always captivated by her songwriting and pop, dark and unique sound. This song is from her 3rd studio album and you might spot a resemblance to one of the songs in my EP... (that wasn't intentional of course).
2. Charli XCX - 3AM (Pull Up) feat. MØ
What can we say about the queen herself? Charli XCX is a big inspiration and every album she drops is unique and POP AF. Her concert was one of the last ones I saw before Covid hit and I'll never forget it.
3. JAMELIA - Superstar
This was one of my fav songs when I was 7/8 years old and I took inspiration from that era for my EP as well. This makes me feel so young, powerful and sexy.
4. Skrillex & Diplo - To Ü Feat. AlunaGeorge (Oliver Remix)
I think Oliver can turn anything into a retro dance pop gem and they killed it on this one. I found them through the remix they did for Tove Lo, it was love at first "sight". "To Ü" is one of my fav songs featuring many of my fav electronic music artists.
5. Christine and the Queens - La vita nuova (feat. Caroline Polachek)
Neither Christine and the Queens or Caroline Polachek have Italian roots, that's why "La vita Nuova" really surprised me.The Italian/English song is beautifully written and I can spot influences from 80s Italian pop diva music (mainly Anna Oxa if you're curious). Discovering these two artists was a gift: they worked hard on their craft for many years and created a cohesive and honest sound; it's so refreshing to see 2 women making art like this.
