5 Songs I Love w/ Disaster Fantasy

Synth-Pop duo Disaster Fantasy have recently released their new EP 'Girl machine'. Showcasing rich musicality through soundscapes which blend analogue synths and catchy, melodic vocals, the EP highlights the duo's ability to bring both commercial appeal and vibrant, alternative musicality.

We caugth up with the duo to talk about 5 of their all time faves:

Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole

We're sharing some of our favourite songs, but specifically, a few that we've been thinking about as we prepare to record again in December. As the world seems to get darker and weirder, we're leaning into some more industrial sounds, but also striving for something that sounds as new as this did when it came out. After first hearing it, Byron remembers wanting to talk about it with his friends at school immediately, and a sort of general, exciting confusion: 'what was that?'-- that's the effect we want the new songs to have.

Depeche Mode - Shake the Disease

Though our music might be getting a little heavier, we still love a gorgeous melody. Depeche Mode remain a constant source of inspiration in that arena. We also think Martin Gore had the greatest wardrobe of any pop star in the 1980s.

Charli XCX - Everything is Romantic

Just tons of great electronic textures all over this record. I (hi, it's ryann!) love how she writes this love song without any mention of a person-- it's all about a place, and most of what she references is sort of cheap or tacky, but captures a really intoxicating romantic bliss. Also, hearing an arena scream 'fall in love again and again' over and over was the highlight of her show at the 02 last week.

Iggy Pop - Shades

There are a few things we like about this one...for starters, the song really is about sunglasses. But, it's also an example of how we share references in the lead up to working on new songs. Both of us have a pretty good working knowledge of pop music, but it's really fun when we find gaps to fill. Byron knows more about David Bowie and Ryann knows more about Iggy Pop. This Bowie-produced track of Iggy's  was in heavy rotation just before we started recording the latest EP.

Ministry - Everyday is Halloween

This is another proto-industrial bop that's still surfing the early 80s synth wave in an interesting way. But don't worry, there won't be any scratching on our next record.
