Folk solo artist Dryadic recently released the stirring new single 'Smiling In The Dark'. A warming ode to true love the track brings commercial elements whilst remaining rooted in Dryadic's organic folk roots.
We wanted to know more about what music inspires Dryadic's sound, here she is to talk about 5 of her faves!
Shake it off - Florence & the Machine
When I discovered Florence I just fell in love with her voice immediately. She has the most incredible vocal mix of vibrato and belt, and the blend of harp and folk instruments with pop-rock fascinates me. This particular song saw me through a huge breakup and was very healing and empowering. Her 2024 BBC Proms show was hugely awe inspiring stuff. I could genuinely go to my grave happy if I got to perform my songs with an orchestra like that!
The Road - The Levellers
The Levellers were probably my favourite band throughout my teens and were my introduction to alternative music, politics and lifestyle. The fiddle has always been my favourite instrument and I love a good mosh pit - I've seen em loads of times including a few proper special secret, grass roots gigs (unforgettable!). Their music is a real influence on mine, Simon Friend (guitarist) came to the studio where I was recording (years ago!) and remarked on how familiar some of my songs sounded. This song, The Road is fab - all I ever really wanted to do was travel around and play music!
Pride - Grace Petrie
I had the absolute pleasure of supporting Grace in Brighton when she released the Queer as Folk album, which includes this song. I hadn't heard her before that evening and I was blown away by her stage presence, lyrical ability and songs. It's rare that a songwriter can pull off everything she has as an independent solo performer. She's also important representation for the queer community. This song brings me hope, joy and connection when I sing along. Looking forward to seeing her play again this month.
Angel - First Aid Kit
I discovered this duo in lockdown and I am just enveloped by their harmonies when I listen - I really identify with their sound. Many of their songs are lyrically uplifting which is something I try to achieve - I have spent many hours walking the South Downs blasting First Aid Kit in my ears. I have chosen Angel because the lyrics struck me so much that I composed a choral arrangement for my choir to sing as soon as it was released - and they love singing it too!
Your Song - Elton John
I only got into Elton after watching Rocket Man and although Tiny Dancer is my favourite song of his, learning this song (very badly!) on piano really influenced my use of inverted chords, bass lines and voice leaders in my piano work. Also the lyrics (by Bernie) are so authentic, simple and beautiful without being gushy or trite; it's a marvellous bit of songwriting, I could listen to it on repeat.
