5 Songs I Love w/ Eric David Wallace

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

Following the release of his single "Dark Sky," off of his debut EP "The Open Door," Eric David Wallace has received praise from both listeners and critics. The track, which focuses on "the complicated relationship between God and man," is full of synthpop nods to the likes of Depeche Mode, Radiohead, and Portishead.

The album itself is deeply resonant with the Seattle music scene, where Wallace is based. His work in the film world played a part in his cinematic, visually stunning music videos. Accompanying photographs were shot by Karen Mason-Blair, who has worked with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. Recorded at Avast Recording Co., "Dark Sky" is the perfect introduction to Wallace's reflective lyrics and intriguing sound. We sat down with him to discuss where his influence comes from, and how it translates to this latest release!

1. "Nature Boy" - Nat King Cole

"Nat King Cole has been one of my favorite artists for as far back as I can remember. This song is timeless, calm and full of wisdom. The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. It doesn't get much better than this."

2. "Get Back" - The Beatles

"The Beatles have been my favorite band by far since birth! I love this song and how we all need to GET BACK to where we once belonged. Many times in life we get off track and whenever I hear this song it reminds me to GET BACK to music, have fun and enjoy life. Go Home!"

3. "Stranger In Moscow" - Michael Jackson

"Michael Jackson has been a major influence on me musically, cinematically, and professionally. I used to dance around the room with my friends acting out his music videos when I was a kid. This song is so human (like all of Michaels music) and it really gets down to the core of human existence - how does it feel, when you're alone and you're cold inside."

4. "About A Girl (MTV Unplugged)" - Nirvana

"Nirvana is right up there at the top of my list. 'About A Girl (MTV Unplugged)' is my favorite Nirvana song on and MTV Unplugged is my favorite Nirvana album, you can really hear the beauty and simplicity of Kurt Cobain's songwriting on this song/record. And the best part is it was all filmed by MTV and it's free on YouTube."

5. "Straight Edge" - Minor Threat

"I grew up on Punk Rock thanks to my big sis Heather. Minor Threat has such a raw primal sound loaded with explosive energy, but they are also extremely musical. This song says it all. I'm a person, just like you I got better things to do than sit around and smoke dope because I know that I can cope! My first band in high school was a punk rock band I am writing some new punk rock music now. It feels so good getting back to my roots! "

"The Open Door" is available across streaming platforms.
