5 Songs I Love W/ high jump

London dream-pop-come-indietronica duo high jump have just released their stunning debut EP '001' via Tip Top Recoings. A collection of tracks that showcase Mature songwriting, beautifully crafted soundscapes and some glittering production, the EP is a really elegent and striking debut with all the hallmarks of a band on the brink of great things.

We wanted to know more about the bands sound, what inspires them and what shapes their taste. Over to high jump to tell us about 5 of their all time faves!

Calypso - John Denver

For some reason John Denver is something like the patron saint of my family, I think because we had a cassette of his stuck in the family car for years and years. Either way, this song is in our genetics now and reminds me of the best of times; sunny days driving through the Alps, feeling carsick.

Here, There and Everywhere - The Beatles

My favourite Beatles song. There isn’t much I can add to the pile of platitudes on this track, but it’s succinct and timeless, and I can never listen to it just the once.

I Loves You Porgy - Nina Simone

I grew up in sleepy Dorset and first came to London when I was 15 to do some recording with the band I was in at the time. We stayed with the bassist’s family, and on the first night after going to a recording studio for the first time ever, we all fell asleep to this playing on vinyl after a couple of Bacardi Breezers, which was plenty in those days. It still has a soporific effect on me all these years later.

Heaven Or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins

Elizabeth Fraser has such a unique tone and vocal delivery, and this song encapsulates the early Dream Pop jangle that influenced so much of our debut EP. It’s euphoric and melancholic and throws out the rulebook on what makes pop tunes stick.

Candy - Mk.gee

This is my favourite new song of the last year or so. It sounds like you’ve heard it a million times before but can’t quite place it, and it somehow combines swanky 80s yacht rock with wonky modern lo fi. I love it and the live version is even better, so I can’t wait to see Mk.gee live when he tours in October.
