1. The Black Keys - Weight of Love
I love all six minutes and fifty seconds of this masterpiece of an opening track to The Black Keys' most underrated album. It's like 90% instrumental but contains some of their best songwriting ever. And then that bass riff, and Auerbach's heart-ripping guitar solos, so creative and lyrical.
2. Psychic Love - Ultralight
Of course I gotta throw in some LA love! When I lived in Echo Park I had the privilege of seeing Psychic Love at their Echo residency, and then at Vega's Meat Market, a former butcher shop the band had converted into a beautiful concert space. Laura Peters' passing was a huge loss to the scene. In a way, this song encapsulates the feeling of the indie scene here.
3. The Walkmen - Heaven
Hardly a month goes by when I don't listen to this song. The words are simple but perfect; the arrangement is delicate but full of momentum. It fills me with a sort of bright nostalgia. This whole album was a huge inspiration for my LP, Fortune Cookie.
4. Interpol - Next Exit
I've been on another Interpol kick, and they've come up in band practice a few times lately. Their music is so dark and so raw. I noticed I like the slow songs from bands that are known for their fast tracks. I'm a sucker for an overdriven organ, and then the bridge in this song sweeps in and upends the whole narrative, riding the line between the detestable and the romantic.
5. Electrelane - I'm On Fire
When a band can reinterpret or re-contextualize a song in a cover, it's the best thing. Electrelane has to be of the best all-girl rock outfits of all time. Their whole discography is worth a deep-dive.
