Kyros have just released their new single 'Esoterica' once again showcasing their strikingly unique sound, blending electronics, pop and prog-rock into one explosive, intricate and expressive soundscape. Blending pop melodies with 80s rock chorus's and come truly breathtaking musicianship, the band have made a name for themselves as one to watch.
The bands unique musical approach and obvious blend of musical influences shines in their music, obviously we wanted to know more about what is behind the music - What do the band listen to each day? What inspires their musical choices?
We spoke to Robin form the band to find out some of their faves:
1. Like a Prayer - Madonna
This is an absolute favourite of mine from the pop world. For me, the 1980s is the decade where pop music excelled the most. This song was released right at the end of the decade and in a way feels like a culmination of everything that was musically great about the decade. It has hooky melodies, slick production and such a strong sense of musical ambition. An outstanding song that never fails to send a shiver down my spine.
2. Hypersleep – Voyager
One of my more recent musical loves would be 90s jungle and drum and bass. It’s a style of music I love primarily for its emphasis on rhythm and atmosphere, which are two aspects of music that have always fascinated me - this track has both in spades. I discovered the track through a wonderful YouTube channel called Ambiance, which I would highly recommend to anyone wishing to explore the genre further.
3. Awaken - Yes
My band Kyros is mostly known as a progressive rock/pop act, so I thought I’d better throw something in here representing the genre. So I thought I would pick the song that I consider to be the greatest progressive rock song of all time. It has an ethereal quality that is completely unique and I feel like it manages to transcend just about anything else ever written in the rock genre. I would consider it to be a masterpiece for sure.
4. White Noise - Disclosure
This track was released right around the time I was starting to become more interested in electronic dance music. The production of the song with its use of synthesis and sampling creates such a captivating sound palette. I remember being at a party with a large PA and this song came on. When those pitch bends kicked in, my jaw dropped at how powerful it sounded. The song has remained a firm favourite of mine ever since.
5. Green Day – Homecoming
I grew up with a lot of pop punk music and have always enjoyed the songwriting of those bands. But for me, this song is representative of the more musically adventurous end of the genre. There’s obviously a strong rock opera element to the sound, which I’m sure came from bands such as Queen and The Who but I love how Green Day were able to fuse those sounds with the more contemporary elements of rock at the time.
