Last week, Ross Learmonth released his latest solo single, the sweet and poignant, "Because of You." Wrapped in warm melodies and stunning acoustic guitar, the track is an ode to a loved one, encouragement that they are perfect in the authentic ways that they show up. Based in South Africa, Learmonth is an acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has received international fame for his work with supergroup Prime Circle and previous solo album Carousel.
We sat down with Learmonth to discuss his favorite tracks, and how they lend him inspiration.
1."Francesca" - Hozier
"It actually doesn't matter what song it is by Hozier, I love his melody choices and storytelling - there is a connection in his music that he has with the audience that I resonate within my own music."
2. "Read My Mind" - The Killers
"I actually cover this song in my own set, which is something I don’t do a lot of (covers), however, the way this song connects with a live audience is amazing and I love the story behind the song. Also, Brandon Flowers is the epitome of an incredible frontman and performer."
3. "Charlie Brown" - Coldplay
"When this song kicks in, it kicks like a mule and sets your soul on FIRE!! If you could ask me which song of another artist I wish I’d written, this would be it. The sheer power of this song and the impact it has is just incredible - they truly captured magic in a bottle."
4. "Colors" - Beck
"The evolution and staying power of this artist is insane. Like an old friend, I know there will always be a connection with his work. I’ve been a fan since ‘Loser’ till now and this artist’s continuous musical progression is something to seriously respect and aspire to."
5. Gold-Diggers Sound- Leon Bridges
" The production of this album is so tasteful and new, but feels familiar in a good way. Every instrument perfectly in its place and Leon right on top singing the most beautiful love songs."
"Because of You" is available across streaming platforms.
