5 Songs I Love w/ Sally Mango

San Francisco's Sally Mango have just released their third full-length album, Homemade. 11 songs of funk-infused melodies and groovy beats encapsulates exactly what its title suggests – a truly self-made record from start to finish.

Inspired by the golden fields and beaches of California, the band wrote most of the album in West Marin. From the recording, production, mixing and mastering, the band took the reins on this project. They shared on the album, Homemade is us holding the music fully in our control and leveling up our abilities to complete a song from start to finish on our own.”

Celebrating a full six years of groovy music-making, the band’s chemistry runs deep – from childhood friends, college friends, and roommates, the band came together through a series of serendipitous events; and their music holds snippets of their most special experiences.

We sat down with Sally Mango to discuss the songs that inspired Homemade!

Pink Floyd: Breathe

I think what stands out most from Breathe is that guitar strum that feels like it rings through your body! We specifically tried to channel the energy of Pink Floyd, with a modern indie-soul touch, in our song “Folded Faces” off this album.

Tune-Yards: Bizness

I feel like I’m falling slowly from the top of a tall tree to the bottom of a jungle with different animals going in and out of singing to me. The whole song carries that vibe despite different sections coming in and out. This was a big inspiration for “Hummingbird” off this album in particular.

Bonnie Raitt: Nick of Time

Another classic. Bonnie can take such a simple groove + melody and make it the best damn song ever. We’ve been trying to lean more into that simplicity as a band on Homemade.

Steve Lacy: C U Girl

Within seconds of hearing this song I’m bobbing my head and making a stank face. We tried our best to channel this in Love Inventory.

Limp Bizkit: Break Stuff

Our drummer considers this song to be the peak of pop culture as we know it.
