Since signing with indie label Modern Sky UK, home to the likes of Red Rum Club and The Lottery Winners, Alex Spencer has caught the attention of the nation, and broadcast to the world via a range of outlets. Recently, the seventeen-year-old became the first musician to ever perform live on Sky Sports News, and within the past few weeks supports The Lathums and Jake Bugg at Robins Park. Following on from his busking roots in his Manchester home town, Alex’s momentum grows.
Written and recorded while Alex’ was still at school, the artist still showed impressive maturity for the second EP outing There’s Gotta Be More. The songwriting talent is clear, Alex able to transform fluctuating emotions, worldly observation and love’s missed opportunities into a set of four endlessly infectious anthems.
In ‘Nightmares’ Alex speaks to personal loneliness, whilst in ‘Fear Will Kill The Future’, the artist dives into anxiety and doubt in progress, highlighting both individual development and the wider impact of people holding themselves back. Across these topics and those covered in the title track and ‘Love And Let Go’, Alex brings a genuine thoughtfulness and authenticity, whilst accepting some of his youthful naivety. Set for stardom? That’s not for me to decide, but I don’t think there’s any doubt Alex will continue to charge forward.
Reflecting on the project, Alex adds, “My latest release contrasts childhood innocence with adult realities. Based on personal experiences, the raw and introspective writing evokes nostalgia and reflection. The project aims to connect deeply with listeners, highlighting life's complexities and the search for meaning.”
