Aruna’s new single ‘thoughts & therapy’ takes audiences on an emotional exploration of relationship turmoil. The self-reflection that comes with confusion, regret and a shake of identity is given in spades, taking hold of a pop-punk atmosphere with tongue-in-cheek coping mechanisms and heart-wrenching performances. Aruna explains, “thoughts & therapy is a coming-of-age tune which represents a time at which I was trying to figure out how to navigate the world on my own again after a break-up. At nearly 26, I’m still not sure what it means to be an adult.”
The song is still laced with optimism, however, Aruna confronting her flaws and leaving behind chaos; trying desperately to find a clean break moves from emotional avoidance to a mature and necessary decision. The artist continues “While in those moments, it’s okay to feel like the victim for a bit, it’s all about finding your own redemption-arc by taking accountability for your own happiness.” If nothing else, the track represents the complexity of healing, but Aruna, alongside the listener, finds her belonging, whilst delivering a stadium-filling energy.
A Kolkata-born artist, Aruna brings plenty of sonic parallels to Olivia Rodrigo and Avril Lavigne, balancing the grungy pop-rock sound of the early 2000s and its 2020s revival in her music, as well as the self-confident reflectiveness of Taylor Swift. A constant champion of diversity both in her music and broader life, Aruna not only brings impressive songwriting but also offers representation as a woman of colour in pop.
This mission and her undeniable talent have both fed into performances supporting the likes of Jools Holland and X-Factor U.K. finalist Kevin Davy White, picking up the ears of tastemakers along the way.
