Originally forming as a five-piece in the eighties, seeing success, fragmenting and then returning as a duo in 2016, Beat The Drum has shown its staying power as a cult band. Independent and proud from day one, Beat The Drum prides itself on its mission statement ‘WE MAKE THE RULES’, evolving its music and elevating it to new heights.
Producing all of the punk-edged attitude of The Stranglers’ original rendition, Beat The Drum approaches ‘No More Heroes’ with a homaging attitude, but is determined to make the sound their own. Chris Calloway and Steve Murrell achieve this with a steadier approach, almost methodical in their electronic additions and the central chugging riff.
Subtly building the atmosphere across the entire track, with the occasional hook boosting the energy, Beat The Drum lands a final chorus of repeating hooks with tension and power, the last moment laced with a final shout.
Beat The Drum adds, “We were working on a very insistent raw guitar riff, which had this punky energy and attitude that developed into our cover of ‘No More Heroes’. The original version of the song had a lot of widdley keyboards and guitar noodling which we have dispensed with. Stripped back to its bare bones the attitude and spirit shine more brightly in this powerful and energetic song.”
