Cassia release blissful ‘whatstheuse’

Cassia have been charging on to the indie-pop scene with their music since their debut single in 2017. They started life in the market town of Macclesfield, near Manchester. Since then they’ve released two albums and tours relentlessly, seen acclaim from Radio 1, editorial playlists and press, showing their staying power. They continue to develop their sound into a more complex stage, whilst still keeping the light and breezy elements fans have fallen in love with.

Cassia’s latest song takes on a slightly more melancholic vibe to their previous releases, whilst still capturing the optimism and positivity that they have grown their fanbase around. A flowing, lo-fi piano underlines the main vocals, alongside the use of gentle drums and pretty ukulele, this softer approach to instrumentation is a welcome one, and suits the band as much as the bombastic excitement. It’s a summertime anthem once again for Cassia, as they continue to make a splash in the industry.

Frontman Rob Ellis shares, “This song is about willingly coming to terms with a chapter of life that has come to a natural end then suddenly being thrust straight into a completely new and vulnerable beginning. I think that humans tend to not deal very well with being in this position, so that thought was always in the back of my mind when writing the lyrics for this tune.

The song was one of the last songs I wrote on a trip over to Berlin and I didn't really think that I had enough energy in me to get something written. I was really feeling the pressure and I knew I had to get myself in the zone and make something new. The track was written with a friend of mine who was visiting Berlin and he had this piano loop prepared- we built the track around that loop and it just pieced together seamlessly.”
