Rising Nigerian-American music star, Christiana Igbokwe, has just released her highly anticipated single "Ku Saura," a powerful message of peace and unity that brings together her unique blend of music activism, heritage, and boundless talent.
At just 12 years old, Christiana Igbokwe is following in the musical footsteps of her legendary grandmother, the late Christy Essien-Igbokwe, known as the “Lady of Songs.” A true icon of African music, Christy’s legacy continues to inspire generations of artists, and Christiana is carrying the torch with determination and passion. "Ku Saura," a modern reinterpretation of Christy Essien-Igbokwe's classic track "Ku Saura Re Ni," combines the timeless sound of her grandmother's voice with fresh, contemporary influences and features the King of Arewa Music, Ali Jita.
The single "Ku Saura" (which translates to "Listen to Me" in English) is a call for unity in a world desperately in need of healing and togetherness. Christiana, who recently became the youngest recipient of The Diana Award for her humanitarian efforts, expressed that the song is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the Holy Month. In a statement, she shared, “It is a time for people to set aside their differences, forgive one another, and unite as one under God.”
Working with Ali Jita and learning the Hausa language as part of the creative process, Christiana describes the journey as “a destined adventure into history.” The track features the traditional northern Goje instrument, a unique African string instrument made from natural materials like lizard skin and horsehair, which holds deep spiritual significance. “The Goje is like a spiritual bridge—it connects the physical to the spiritual, and we could feel my grandma’s presence throughout the recording,” Christiana added.
"Ku Saura" is not only a tribute to Christiana’s heritage but a reflection of her growing influence as a musical force. The track brings together the voices of a legend, the promise of a rising star, and a message that transcends generations. Christiana’s fresh twist on this African classic, with the unique addition of Ali Jita’s signature sound, is a musical celebration of African culture, unity, and peace.
On the release, Christina Igbokwe shares, “KU SAURA sends a message of Oneness to the world. There is beauty and power in unity.”
Alongside "Ku Saura," Christiana is gearing up for the release of her debut albums, Happy Days, a children’s album, and, Rebirth, fusing genres of a fusion of Afro-funk and Afro pop, which pays tribute to the timeless legacy of her grandmother. These albums will solidify Christiana's place as one of the next big names in African music.
With her impressive musical accomplishments, advocacy for gender equality, and her ongoing efforts to inspire positive change, Christiana Igbokwe continues to prove that she is not just following in the footsteps of her grandmother, but is also forging a path of her own. "Ku Saura" is a powerful testament to her talent and the lasting impact of Christy Essien-Igbokwe’s influence on the African music landscape.
