US post-punk quintet Dead Tooth is back with their latest single, "Birthday Boohoo," released on October 18th via Greenway Records. Known for their unapologetic energy and distinct “rodeo-core” sound, the Queens-based band continues to carve out a chaotic yet thrilling niche in the post-punk scene. Produced by Tom Beaujour (Nada Surf, Pom Pom Squad), the track’s frenetic spirit is further amplified by a remix on the B-side from A Place To Bury Strangers' Oliver Ackermann.
"Birthday Boohoo" offers listeners a gritty, dissonant blend of punk, noise rock, and sax-laden anarchy. Zach Ellis’ raw, brazen vocals bring an edge to the track, while the jagged guitar riffs and swirling saxophone lines courtesy of John Stanesco add a feverish texture that makes Dead Tooth’s sound hard to pin down—but impossible to ignore. There's a compelling disarray in their approach that brings comparisons to heavyweights like At the Drive In and The Jesus Lizard, yet Dead Tooth manages to inject their own brand of wild unpredictability.
The production shines, thanks to Beaujour’s knack for capturing the controlled chaos that defines Dead Tooth’s aesthetic. The remix by Ackermann introduces a haunting, atmospheric layer to the B-side, offering a fresh twist on the original while maintaining the track’s frenetic core.
With their extensive European tour looming, including stops at the UK’s Shacklewell Arms and Big Hands, Dead Tooth is poised to unleash their raucous sound across the pond. Their live performances, which have earned them praise from NME and Spin, promise to bring their anarchic energy to new audiences.
"Birthday Boohoo" solidifies Dead Tooth’s place in the post-punk revival scene, with its abrasive yet addictive energy. If this single is any indication, their next chapter will be loud, raw, and wildly entertaining.
