Collecting some of the most underappreciated tracks from jazz standards, and country anthems, with the occasional dose of original songwriting prowess, Ellen Woloshin’s third and latest album Pop Torch is a sentimental mix of ballad performances, bringing a pop infectiousness to her nostalgic vocals. Her natural sounding vocals, when paired with live instrumentation, is the perfect package for a showcase of both performer and song.
The use of very specific instruments and allowing them to adapt to the new sounds with their own influence is the perfect way to make such an eclectic track list so cohesive and adaptive. Though Ellen’s solo projects are few and far between Pop Torch is an example of why they continue to emerge and what makes Ellen such a passionate performer.
Ellen explains the album from her perspective, ”If you take a bunch of disparate beads and string them together to make a necklace, what would the finished product look like? That’s the concept behind this album. I took songs from various genres and decades, some of my own, some by others, with the hope that in the end, that necklace would come together as a unique statement of its own. I hope you enjoy the result!”
Ellen’s lifelong connection to music began with classical piano studies and vocal self-discovery at 16. Transitioning from a potential career in the classical field, she joined her father, renowned jingle writer Sid Woloshin, spinning jingles for diverse brands.
Eventually, Ellen pursued her passion for performing and songwriting, both as part of duo Woloshin and Griffin and as a solo stunner. A multi-decade career behind her, she has also written for the likes of Dionne Warwick and LaToya Jackson and graced stages across New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville.
