Released in December 2022 as part of Generator's First Notes program, False Alarm marks the debut of Newcastle’s alt-rock band, Porcelain.
Recorded at Blast Studios and produced by Andy Bell, the track quickly became a fan favorite, resonating deeply with audiences at live shows. It's an emotionally charged piece that intertwines heartfelt lyrics with swirling guitar melodies, encapsulating the band’s raw energy and sincerity.
The song's origins are as humble as they are significant. Frontman Curtis recalls how False Alarm began as a simple four-bar chord progression paired with some “doo doo doos” before evolving into something much more profound. While the song initially lacked a clear direction or title, it eventually found its voice through the personal experiences of Curtis and his wife, Antonina, who hails from Ukraine. The invasion of her country brought intense emotional strain, which Curtis channeled into the lyrics.
False Alarm is a powerful expression of anxiety and longing, capturing the fear and uncertainty that comes with navigating life in tumultuous times. Lines like “The fear’s contagious underneath these siren sounds” directly reference the air raid sirens in Ukraine, but they also metaphorically connect to the alarm bells and panic within Curtis’s own mind.
Despite its heavy themes, the song’s creation was almost serendipitous. Curtis recalls how the second verse came together in just 15 minutes while Dan made tea—a testament to the organic and authentic nature of the band’s songwriting process. The sincerity behind False Alarm is palpable, making it a song that resonates on multiple levels.
What makes False Alarm truly special is its ability to connect with listeners in different ways. While it stems from a deeply personal experience, its themes of fear, hope, and love are universal. Curtis’s belief that the song holds different meanings for different people is what gives it lasting impact.
False Alarm is more than just Porcelain’s first track; it’s a powerful introduction to a band that’s unafraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. With its emotive lyrics and captivating instrumentation, it’s no surprise that False Alarm has become a standout track in Porcelain’s growing repertoire.
