First Day of Spring describes themselves as blooming in the low light, with their hazy, shady sound garnering media attention since its 2022 debut. Drawing influence from post-punk and 90s US alternative groups, they seek catharsis through art and melody. Their latest release, an EP teaser titled ‘The Rising Tide,’ continues their exploration of alternative soundscapes.
The opening moments balance an effect-laden electric guitar with the natural resonance of an acoustic counterpart, creating a silvery ethereality, steadily shattered by rising shrill distortion. Vocals emerge over the shadowy atmosphere with ruthless conviction, viewing the world through a lens of unshakable self-confidence. The band explain that the track is about “observing your surroundings and finding a place internally, where you can feel authentic in your own thoughts, beliefs and values without any external deluge of influence. It’s about being an individual. It’s about being strong.”
This individuality, however, seems to manifest in distrust of those surrounding our protagonist, “feeling the silence”, despite an outstretched hand. The shimmer of synths is shrouded in slow drum lines and forlorn arpeggios, the final moments turning back to overloaded tones and a sense of buried anger.
