Glasgow’s rising indie-rock quintet, The Rooks, return with their electrifying second single, ‘Renegade’. Released to coincide with the band support slot for Blossoms at the O2 Academy in Glasgow, ‘Renegade’ cements the band’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the Scottish music scene.
From the outset, ‘Renegade’ captures attention with its intricate layers of thick, crunchy guitar tones, tight basslines, and punchy drums, providing a rich sonic landscape for the emotive, husky and infectiously catchy lead vocal delivery. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Lowe (acclaimed for his work with Stereophonics, Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift), the track takes listeners on a journey from its introspective verses to a soaring, anthemic chorus that builds to an explosive, climactic finale.
Lyrically, ‘Renegade’ delves into themes of escape and self-reflection, resonating with listeners who have ever felt the need to break free. Songwriters Matthew McFadyen and Ross Gardiner reflect on the track’s deeper meaning: “I think the song’s about escaping and leaving something behind...whether that be a feeling, a place, or a person. Maybe, less the need for something new, and more the need to get away from yourself.”
With its infectious hooks and polished yet raw energy, ‘Renegade’ solidifies The Rooks as one of the most exciting new acts emerging from Scotland’s vibrant indie-rock scene. Their high-octane live performances having already sold out Glasgow’s legendary King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut twice and has earned them a growing fanbase. Their upcoming UK tour with Louis Berry promises to introduce their music to even wider audiences.
