Making a defiant return to musicmaking, Scotland’s very own Her Picture are back with their latest cathartic earworm ‘Can’t Think’. Putting an end to a year long hiatus, following the release of single ‘Choir Song’, the group are set to rekindle their distinctive, invigorative spark and assert themselves as a defining musical force.
Opening with a vivid, synthesised angle, ‘Can’t Think’ is quick to make its presence known. Tension is masterfully used throughout the single, building to climactic new heights to give the track a dynamic kick to wash down its alluring, sticky melodies. Crashing into the chorus, ‘Can’t Think’ beholds a cathartic intensity that is equal parts menacing and invigorating, holding just enough of a poppy-sentiment whilst maintaining its foreboding qualities.
Diving into the inspiration behind the track, the band shares, “Can’t Think, in simple terms, is about the fear of being known and seen. Particularly, the track explores the mortifying experience of being perceived when you’re not at your best and wanting to hide from the judgement of others. As a creative, there’s extreme pressure to keep adapting yourself and keep climbing that achievement ladder but sometimes that can’t be sustained because of what’s going on in your personal life. I think that’s where the central conflict of the song comes from; how do I make a career out of being spectated when I’m terrified of how others perceive me, and the control I need to give up to allow that relationship between artist and audience to develop myself.”
