'Pull the Pin' is the latest track from Washington DC-based band Han Gan. Opening with a gritty spoken word with just a tint of melodic performance, Han Gan sets an atmospheric scene with the first moments of the single, the riffs echoing out into the distance and the bass moving freely around a pumping kick drum. When all the elements are given free rein, that is when the energy starts, with the rough and ready nature fully taking over with unbridled delivery and hefty distortion. The track then pushes even further, the instrumentation cascading around, almost falling into itself as it ends up simultaneously distant and closer than ever. A balance of raw punk and otherworldly production, it's an interesting and unique sound.
The band adds, “‘Pull the Pin’ comes from a mediative and spiritual place, which transcends any religious or political doctrines; it started with a question of how to operate from a place of heart-centred love for all, but also be prepared to take the actions necessary to challenge the harms selfish leaders and exploitive economic and cultural programming impose on us all personally and on our world.”
Forming in 2017, the duo behind Han Gan, J. Brian Nicewander and Matt T. Eng, started writing songs together from the tenth floor of a Virginia high-rise overlooking the Potomac River and U.S. Capitol. The project stems from shared memories of the punk acts that played dive bars, pop-ups, and basements in the area, Han Gan allowing them to embrace the sounds that shaped their youth.
