Welcome back, Amber! After a brief departure, what does it feel like to be releasing music again with Never Goes Away?
It feels really great! Music will always be my first love, and it’s the place where I feel most at home. It feels amazing to be home and I’m looking forward to releasing more music each month - especially “November” this month!
Your new single has such a fun, flirty vibe to it. Could you tell us a bit more about the inspiration and story behind Never Goes Away?
The inspiration was a relationship that started really great - but didn’t stay that way. I wanted to tell the story about a really great life changing love that we all experience and the flood of emotion when it turns bad. Its the dichotomy of emotions you feel when you still love someone who has hurt you and you’re holding on to a relationship that you know isn’t good for you.
The song was a personal collaboration with a friend who originally wrote it. How did you know Never Goes Away was a track you had to release yourself?
It just felt right. I am a feeler type of artist, and I often move on my instincts. I wanted a chance to release it and do it my way. The lyrics resonated so much with my experience at the time - it just felt aligned.
You've worked with Grammy-winning producer Printz Board on this track. What was the creative process like with him, and how did his production style influence the final sound?
Printz and I have been close for quite some time and have always looked for opportunities to work together. He always brings an element of swag and is the brightest out of the box thinker I know. He challenges me creatively in a way that brings out some of my best work. I learn more every time we work together and I love learning. In this song, in particular, he had some great ideas for the tag at the end of the song and when we fleshed it out, we both loved it!

You draw from icons like Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson. How have these influences shaped Never Goes Away and your vocal approach to the track?
Whitney Houston, in my humble opinion, was one of the greatest story tellers of all time. My biggest takeaway from her influence has been to yield to the story that I’m telling. In “Never Goes Away”, all of my vocal choices were shaped around this. From Kelly, I’ve learned how to push myself beyond what I believe I’m capable of. When I was on her team on The Voice she helped me realize the power I had vocally and how to harness it. I brought all of that to “Never Goes Away”.
The lyrics capture the highs of falling in love in such a relatable way. Is there a personal story or moment that inspired the song’s message?
The lyrics of the song talk about the highs of falling in love. Sometimes when your feelings are so strong, they don’t seem like they will ever dissipate. In the visual, we emphasized the fine line between love and insanity that can often lead to unhealthy attachment. I resonated with this as someone who has done the work to identify and heal from potentially toxic attachment styles.
Your versatility is clear—from The Voice to Dancing with the Stars and beyond. How does your experience across these platforms influence your music and performance style today?
That’s an excellent question. I have worked so long as a hired gun, as a background vocalist, and as a sound-alike vocal mimic for various productions that I found it hard to discover my own voice as an artist. So I stepped away for a moment to pursue modelling, acting & body positivity advocacy. It was along this journey of exploration that I uncovered MY voice and what I wanted to sound/feel like as an artist.
I am now very clear that my biggest responsibility as an artist is to influence the emotional state of my audience through being my most authentic self. I genuinely resonate with many different genres of music and I have found freedom in my exploration of all of them. Certainly, my experience in various productions over the years has helped me along this journey.
Looking ahead, how does Never Goes Away reflect where you’re headed musically? Should fans expect more of this Pop-Soul sound in your upcoming releases?
“Never Goes Away” is a glimpse into my artistry as a story teller. What’s to come is me telling more of my story through pop, soul, singer-songwriter, r&b, country, etc or whatever genre best serves the story. I want anyone who can relate to my experiences to see themselves and the strength they also have to grow & learn through art.
The track blends Pop, Soul, and R&B so seamlessly. How do you manage to bring such a fresh, modern twist to these classic genres?
I have never been solely focused on genres. I instead focus on telling the story as authentically as possible in the way that resonates with me. As a student of all music, it comes naturally to me to cross between genres and styles.
Lastly, as you step back into the music scene, what’s one thing you want listeners to know about Amber Sauer in this next chapter?
I would love for listeners to know that they have more to look forward to, if they’re fans of powerful vocals and relatable story telling. I would also love for them to know that I am them, and they are me. We are all human & more alike than we are different. It’s through my music and art, that we can connect our shared experiences and grow together.
