Interview: HOLYMAMI on Merging Trap, Punk and Rap on new single 'Centaur'

Rising artist HOLYMAMI has been making waves across the music scene, capturing attention with her genre-blending sound and fearless approach to music. Her latest single, ‘Centaur’, further cements her reputation as an innovative force, combining the intensity of punk rock with the rhythmic edge of rap and trap.

With ‘Centaur’, HOLYMAMI taps into a fusion of influences that resonate with fans of both punk and rap, delivering a track that’s powerful, rebellious, and full of raw energy. From hard-hitting beats to explosive guitar riffs, the song is an adrenaline-fueled anthem that captures HOLYMAMI’s unique ability to transcend genres.

The single serves as a bold statement of self-expression. ‘Centaur’ is more than just a song—it's a reflection of HOLYMAMI’s inner world. Inspired by her Sagittarius star sign, the track is a personal ode to the symbol of the centaur. “I wanted to create a theme song for an alter ego—though not exactly an alter ego, because it’s still me,” she explains. “It’s also an ode to being a Sagittarius, but not in a corny way. I pulled from Greek mythology, anime, and superhero/villain references to create something that reflects Sagittarius’ duality—either the hero or the villain, powerful either way.”

HOLYMAMI sat down with FLEX to talk about the new single and her journey in music so far.

Thank you for sitting down and talking to FLEX, can you tell us a bit about how you got into music?

I have a friend that I respect dearly who Has been doing music since they were a kid And has been in a band since they were a kid tell me to just go for it. After talking with him, I gained the confidence I needed to move forward with the sound I wanted. I struggled a lot with wanting to get into music because I felt like it was something everyone was doing and I didn't want to Create a sound in music if I had nothing new to offer.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

My biggest musical influences are definitely Betty Davis, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Skin Skunk Anansie, X-Ray Spex and PJ Harvey. There's much more but I would say these are the people that made me go "huh so you can sound like however you want to and people that need to find you will find you." I also just enjoy people who scream in a melodic way.

Congratulations on your brand-new single 'Centaur' —what inspired this particular release?

I created this song because I wanted to create a theme song to an alter ego kind of, not really an alter ego because I'm still pulling this from myself. I enjoy the symbolism of my star sign Sagittarius so I would say it's an ode to being a Sagittarius actually. I wanted to make a Sagittarius song but not in a corny way so a lot of the bars I wrote pulled from Greek mythology and anime/superhero/villain references. I feel like Sagittarius is either the hero or villain & nothing in between yet powerful nonetheless.

How do you channel personal experiences into your songwriting, and what do you hope listeners gain from connecting with your music?

When I write a song, I try to make sure I’m feeling all the emotions that led to the song While I’m writing it and in the studio while I’m recording it in the hopes of transferring that energy so people can really feel what I’m saying. I hope listeners gain a sense of power and new energy when listening. I feel like there’s a lot of sad music now and not enough that reminds people of their power or just gets people riled up positively.

Each aspect of music—writing, recording, practicing, and playing live—offers something different. Can you share a particularly meaningful moment from each?

A meaningful moment from writing is being able to zone out from the world and put pen to paper about how I’m feeling. A meaningful moment recording is when I’m able to be in the studio with friends and not just people who are paid to do their job so new ideas form easier and I feel more connected to what I’m saying because my friends are watching too. A meaningful moment when I’m practising is honestly the opportunity to just face myself and figure out how I want to be perceived while I’m performing, A lot of people don’t get to do that and I’m glad music helped me refine my perception. A meaningful moment when performing live is when you finally disconnect from the thought of being in front of people and just unlock your desire to bear your soul.

Is there a song in your repertoire that holds a particularly deep personal meaning for you? Can you share the story or inspiration behind it?

Yes, there’s a song on my EP called “Fading” this was my first time riding and singing a love ballad. I want to say it’s the most sentimental song I have so far, Most of my songs are of me screaming so I enjoy singing it because it’s easy to dive into the lyrics and to really feel  They need to be softer when singing it. The inspiration behind it is my future partner, so this song was made with them in mind whoever they are, Wherever they are.

What are your goals for the future with your music?

My goal with my music is to keep letting it inspire me to create and heal me and in the process and intern inspire others and heal others.

What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from your music?

My number one feeling I hope people take away is a sense of pride and power and resistance to whatever the status quo is.

To wrap things up, is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Nothing left to share, but thank you for the opportunity to connect with your readers and If you're eating this, whatever leap you're scared to take go ahead and take it.
