Fresh off the release of his EP, ENDGAME, JAIZE is magnificently showcasing his artistic abilities. With this compilation of tracks, listeners are brought on a musical journey whilst captivating music enthusiasts far and in between.
We sat down with JAIZE to discuss his music and much more. Here is what he had to say:
Hey JAIZE, welcome to FLEX! How are you?
Thanks! I’m feeling great, and glad to be here right now.
Congratulations on your brand-new song 'nostalgia64' - what inspired this particular track?
This track is inspired by my childhood memories and the sound I wanted to pursue when I first started rapping. All of the sound clips sampled are from media or devices I used to watch and play on a lot. I want it to be a callback to those times.
And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?
Yes and no. I'm always thinking of random verses and wordplay, so when those moments come I grab my phone and write them down. My next step is selecting an instrumental and letting the rhythm guide my natural flow of writing. The first couple of lines usually dictate how the song is going to be, and I go off of that momentum. If I force writing, nothing good comes out of it.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was great! At the time I was working at an elementary school, and I would carry around a clipboard with paper so I could jot down lines/ work on lyrics if something came to mind. Anytime I was free, I was listening to the instrumentals and making progress on writing. When I would return to class, I'd revise the lyrics without the music to see how it flowed. Recording was challenging, but fun as well. I try to get my verses all in one take so there is not much vocal editing needed.
For viewers who don't know JAIZE, how would you describe your sound?
New age hip-hop, psychedelic rap with R&B influence. I try to take a little piece of everything I like in a genre/sound and make it mine.
And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio?
I love being outdoors! I got to visit Wisconsin's Schlitz Audubon Nature Center recently and it was an amazing experience. I love video games, especially the older generations, listening to music, and reading. Been on YouTube a lot lately, lots of great stuff to learn about. I breakdance and tag when I can.
