Prism Waves (formally RÊVE) is the crisp air of a midnight drive, like you are riding the waves of a dream. This four-piece group has distinctively fused their take on indie rock with an intense and ethereal performance of stunning visuals and visceral emotions. Consisting of Athena Hiotis, Nik Kosmas, Scott Griffith, and Shareef Taher, their lush arrangements, dynamic rhythms, and infectious melodies bring you to a dreamscape you’d swear you’ve never been to before but somehow faintly remember.
We caught up with the talented quartet to find out all about their luscious new single 'MONSTR' exclusively for FLEX:
Hey Prism Waves, welcome to FLEX!
Hey thanks for having us. Athena and Shareef here today.
Could you describe your sound & style for any of our readers who may not have heard of you before?
Athena: The four of us come from different backgrounds of music so we end up with this spectrum of indie rock. Some stuff is cinematic, other songs are groovey. Others are just endless weeping into the abyss.
Give us a fun fact about yourself we can’t find from Google/social media!
Shareef: Not only do I rehearse a voicemail before I leave one, I also say it several times after I hang up to make sure i did ok
Tell us all about your new single MONSTR?
Athena: The song/video is really a story about our relationship with inspiration. Sometimes we have nothing and are pretty blank, then you get into flow, the colours are popping, lyrics are flowing. And it's a beautiful, painful dance.
Also so-not fun fact - this release took about 3 years total to happen. Let's hope that never happens again.
Please tell us a bit about your creative process when it comes to songwriting.
Athena: Over covid it was a lot of me sending the guys ideas and saying "okay so here's the basic idea, don't mind the drums, bass, guitars, and nothing about the vocals makes sense. Thoughts?"
But typically, one of us shares an idea and we bounce it around; then we like to come together and see what an organic play-through yields. We also really enjoy working with producers because they really push us. and we need it.
Who or what influences the sounds in MONSTR?
Shareef: The letter E, which in many ways looks like a monster, so we had to take it out of the title because it’s far too scary of a letter.
What do you like best about your newest single?
Athena: It's no longer sitting in our dropbox.
Shareef: It wasn’t written by Clint Eastwood, like all our other songs.
& Lastly, what can fans expect from Prism Waves next?
Athena: Releases that don't take 27 years to come to fruition is the general plan. We are working on some cool songs/videos that we'll be releasing soon. Very stoked on that.
