Interview - RATIOS

RATIOS are an emerging indie-rock band from Ireland. Formed in 2021, Dan O'Shaughnessy and Liam Brady entered the studio to release their debut single ‘Yellow Ribbon’ which they were aiming to both draw some attention to their sound and attract a bassist to join. Mike O'Sullivan discovered the duo in an ad that the band had published. He became a driving force behind the band’s sound and invited a whole new platform for them to experiment creatively.

Since then, RATIOS have showcased their diverse rock and other genre flavourings in iconic venues like Whelan’s, Fibber Magees, and The Workman’s Club, performing loud, raw, and energetic shows.

Returning with their brand-new single, ‘Take A Stab’, the creation almost dates back ten years; the three-piece lineup revived and fully developed the lyrics and structure in 2022. Dan had penned lyrics and a rough structure back in the day before the trio cemented the complete track.

We sat down with RATIOS to discuss their music and much more. Here's what t hey had to say:

Hey RATIOS welcome to FLEX! How are you?

Feeling very good, thank you!

Congratulations on your new single ‘Take a Stab’ - what inspired this particular track?

Thank you! I suppose the track is inspired by lots of different events I had witnessed growing up in a small town with not a whole lot to do. I had written half of the song a few years ago but it never really came to life until I brought it to rehearsal one evening. It felt quite easy to finish off from where I had left it all those years ago and we bashed it out over one rehearsal.

And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?

Not particularly. One of us could have a riff of some sort or some lyrics and we generally bring it to rehearsals and toy with it for a while until something sits nicely with us. Sometimes we get nothing from a particular riff or whatever and we just park it and come back to it after a few weeks.

How was the recording and writing process?

Excellent. We have been working with Alan Kelly on all of our releases and he is an inspiration to us when we get into the studio with him. He always hears new sounds or harmonies and pushes us to get the most out of our work and we are always pleased with the end result. Before the studio, we would have demoed the song ourselves and worked on the parts we felt needed to be made more interesting. It was a pretty quick process. We all work really well together when it comes to writing and we trust each other on what is good or what is bad.

For viewers who don’t know RATIOS, how would you describe your sound?

No idea. It is a mix of everything really. We have been told we are punk, indie, alternative, indie punk etc. It’s hard to put a label on it. We like to play loud and our songs are energetic!

And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio? We all work, study, and have side interests so they really take over when we aren’t writing or performing.
