We sat down with Astra upon the release of new single 'Pulp Fiction', which we love. We discuss what influences the unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow Astra on their journey!
Thank you for sitting down and talking to FLEX, can you tell us a bit about how you got into music?
It’s always been a great outlet for me to express myself, but honestly growing up I just wanted to be on MTV.
Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
I have always had a large range of influences a more recent influence would be 24K Golden, but growing up Eminem, Will Smith and Kesha just made music seem so fun to me
Congratulations on your brand-new single 'Pulp Fiction' - what inspired this particular song?
I just really enjoyed the movie. And I say the quotes too much so I had to outlet that somewhere… but on a deeper level, I have always loved Samuel L Jackson because he exudes so much confidence and commands such presence on screen.
How do you channel personal experiences into your songwriting, and what do you hope listeners gain from connecting with your music?
Well, I guess just by living and reflecting on the intrinsic emotions I felt in the moment when it was time to write music. I also think it’s important to not take yourself too seriously and just have fun! For example, the main emotions I want people to feel in regards to Pulp Fiction are to feel confident, cool and happy.
Each aspect of music - writing, recording, practising, and playing live - offers something different. Can you share a particularly meaningful moment from each?
To be honest, when creating this song the most memorable moments, were when filming the video. Myself and the crew were all huge fans of the movie, and being able to recreate beloved scenes with my own musical twist was fantastic! Additionally, this is the first song I played at my first gig, so that’s pretty sentimental.
Is there a song in your repertoire that holds a particularly deep personal meaning for you? Can you share the story or inspiration behind it?
Yes definitely. But unfortunately, it hasn’t been released yet. (But it’s coming soon, so get hyped for the 25th of November). It is so important to me because it is when I truly started being myself and learning to write with my emotions.
What are your goals for the future with your music?
My plans for the future would be to build a community of people who are positively impacted by my music and find value in what it provides.
What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from your music?
I want to make a diverse range of music, that impacts listeners in many different ways and makes them feel a large array of emotions.
To wrap things up, is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I'm excited to meet you all over this journey and there is new music coming out on the 25th of November so stay tuned.
