Los Angeles-based folk-pop duo JOHNNYSWIM return with their deeply evocative fifth studio album, When The War Is Over, via MR AND MRS SWIM LLC. Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez—whose roots trace back to Nashville and whose family lineage includes the iconic Donna Summer—continue to enchant with a collection of songs that delicately balance emotion and resilience, vulnerability and strength.

Over their nearly two-decade career, JOHNNYSWIM have earned more than 575 million global streams and built a loyal fanbase through appearances on major talk shows like The Tonight Show and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. Their music, celebrated for its rich storytelling and captivating melodies, has garnered widespread support from the likes of Rolling Stone, NPR, and The Huffington Post. And with an upcoming performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a European tour in May, their influence is only growing.

When The War Is Over is a powerful reflection of the duo’s journey—both personal and musical. The 11-track album explores themes of self-discovery, vulnerability, and navigating life’s emotional complexities. Abner and Amanda’s songwriting is raw and sincere, crafted with a sense of quiet intensity that invites listeners to journey through life’s toughest moments with a sense of hope. From its minimalist piano melodies to its orchestral flourishes, the album’s arrangements exude intention, with each instrument carefully chosen to elevate the emotional core of the tracks.

The album’s standout track, "Dopamine," is a poignant example of JOHNNYSWIM’s unique ability to blend genres while staying true to their roots. Featuring the talented rapper and singer Tobe Nwigwe, the song opens with an infectious beat that grounds the track in a sense of urgency and introspection. Tobe’s rapid-fire delivery contrasts beautifully with the tender vocals of Abner and Amanda, creating a dynamic interplay between raw emotion and lyrical depth. The swelling guitar riffs and soaring choral arrangements further amplify the song’s poignant message about personal growth and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with it.

“This album came from one of the most challenging seasons of our lives. When The War Is Over felt like the right title because, for a long time, it felt like we were in a battle—physically, emotionally, and mentally. We wrote these songs while navigating health struggles, therapy, and the process of truly feeling our feelings instead of running from them. Musically, we wanted this album to feel as honest as the lyrics, so we recorded it the old-school way—live, in a room with our favorite musicians, discovering the songs as we played them. Every instrument has eyeballs, every sound is real and alive. More than anything, we hope this album makes you feel known. That whatever battles you’re facing, you know you’re not alone. And we hope you find moments of release—because sometimes, the best thing we can do is let go and move forward”.

Throughout the album, JOHNNYSWIM’s sound continues to evolve, with their trademark folk-pop sensibility infused with nuanced Americana, soul, and gospel influences. Tracks like "Tears In The Rain" and "Back To You" strike a delicate balance between longing and resolution, while "Silent Stars" presents a moment of vulnerability as Abner and Amanda’s harmonies intertwine against a sparse backdrop.

Produced by Abner Ramirez, When The War Is Over is an album that captures both the power of intimacy and the catharsis found in facing one's demons. The record’s layered compositions allow for repeated listening, with new details revealing themselves each time—whether it’s the subtle interplay of a piano and shaker or the dynamic shift between verses and choruses.

For fans of Needtobreathe, Olivia Dean, and Teddy Swims, When The War Is Over offers a glimpse into a duo that has found its voice, melding heartfelt vulnerability with bold, genre-blending instrumentation. This album is a testament to the growth and perseverance of JOHNNYSWIM, reminding us all that even when the war is over, the battles within continue to shape us.
