Two inspiring artists, LION and Dope Saint Jude, have arrived together with a fiery collaboration, ‘MITMITA’. The plucky production balances raw and enticing elements, whilst the overall polish is left with an unapologetic penchant for genre-bending, huge bass lines, dynamic vocals and an infectious melody all working towards tearing down the barriers of electro-pop and reinstating them in a new image.
Dope Saint Jude’s feature delivers the high-energy, let-loose lines that we expect to see, driving the pulsating top line even further into experimentalism whilst unveiling captivating rhythms.
Dope Saint Jude adds, “LION’s production made it easy to jam on and create fun music, we are also committed to creating spaces where our diverse experiences are acknowledged and our identities are honoured … Through music and advocacy, we strive to inspire change and foster a sense of belonging and pride within our community.”
LION’s performances are constantly evolving across the track, pulling apart the instrumental and using its heavy feel to transform the vocal production. Taking the lead, the different angles brought to the table all electrify the mix, and allow a deeper, more performative, product.
LION explains some of the themes of identity he dives into on the track, “In my case, being LGBTQIA+ is often deemed as ‘un-African’, which is a major source of identity conflict for myself and many others I am aware of. These discriminatory statements are often made in the name of religious beliefs which in turn see us queer folk referred to as ‘devils.’ I decided to mock that character by showcasing that we’re not evil, but rather a beautiful community. We’ll continue to stand strong in our power with this song and its invitation for any BIPOC friends who have felt shame around their identity to reclaim our narratives together!”
LION is a queer, black, electropop artist whose three years under Tomboi Records have seen him evolve into an incredibly exciting artist with a distinctive and alternative sound that hits to personal feelings and societal issues.
Dope Saint Jude, based in Cape Town, is an equally energising force, her attention from EP projects and global tours cementing her as an artist to keep an eye on. As an advocate for the queer community, she speaks globally about her experiences.
