Los Angeles based duo Merlot Embargo, are back with a new track entitled ‘I Am Not OK’. Effortlessly infectious, joyous, but relatable in its bittersweet lyricism, we listen as a protagonist begins to come to terms with her own emotions and feelings. Whether its the clap and percussion rhythms, the playful melodies that cross over each or Scarlett’s emphatic vocal performance, the leaps and bounds that the track takes all lead back to themes of depression, comparison and reflection. However, that doesn’t stop the track from being drenched in optimism for better times and feeling good once again.
The duo share, “We tried to address the struggles of isolation and battling one’s own demons, but with the twist of simultaneously watching your partner out there conquering the world. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but very much based on very real feelings.”
Merlot Embargo first began when a near fatal car accident left the pair in a state of self-reflection and a new appreciation for life. This drove them to music, Scarlett and Geoff, a seat-of-the-pants singer-songwriter, and a music school nerd and engineer, joining forces to combine their approaches and styles into the indie-pop Americana that has garnered them a fanbase since 2016.
