Good Christmas songs are hard to come by, usually due to the lack of genuine creativity which goes into creating them. Luckily Nashville Phil has us covered with his brilliantly funny if slightly un merry and messy new offering 'Swerve Me Again'.
Built around a murky, boxy country backdrop of fuzzy guitar tones, shuffling drums and bright bells, the track creates a lo-fi, vintage tone to match the gruff delivery of Nashville Phil's lazy vocal style and bizarre, dark-humoured lyricism. Comparable to Tom Waits, the tracks stylistic soundscape and lyrics feel like they could in fact be 'The Piano Has Been Drinking' in another universe where everything is a Christmas song.
As Nashville Phil talks through trying to be a good boy but ultimately ends up essentially inviting Santa for a raucous night of drinking, taking cocaine and hiring hookers, the result brings an uncomfortable laugh out loud humour marred in the fuzzy darkness of the production and somehow, the track is charming... how has Nashville Phil done this? While the track has its faults, this underlying likability is what allows the track to truly shine and displays Phil's unquestionable talents as a songwriter - certainly the best new Xmas song you will hear this year at the very least!
