Dublin’s indie rock scene is about to get a jolt of fresh energy with the release of Pants On Fire’s latest single, 'Vodka Shampoo'
The track is more than just a new addition to their discography—it’s a declaration of the band’s evolving identity and the culmination of a year-long journey of creative exploration.
The story of 'Vodka Shampoo' begins about a year ago, during a jam session with the band’s former members, Mel and Matt. At the time, Pants On Fire were still finding their footing as a group, experimenting with sounds and ideas that would later define their style. Among the various ideas that surfaced during these sessions, one stood out—a catchy chorus that stuck in their heads and became a foundation for future development.
This early version of the song was raw and unpolished, but it held potential. However, before the track could fully take shape, the band experienced a significant lineup change. Matt and Mel’s departure paved the way for the arrival of Jeff and Kaelig, two musicians whose influence would steer the band in a new direction. "When Jeff and Kaelig joined, we decided to work on this song," says Finn, the band’s frontman. "It took a while and went through a couple of key changes and other ideas until we came out with what we have now."
The new lineup brought fresh perspectives and a heavier, more dynamic sound to Pants On Fire; The band began to rework 'Vodka Shampoo,' incorporating the distinct styles of their new members. The process wasn’t straightforward—the track underwent several key changes, structural adjustments, and countless creative tweaks. But the band was determined to let the song evolve naturally, embracing the collaborative energy that Jeff and Kaelig brought to the table.
The result is a track that’s both powerful and eclectic, reflecting the band’s growth over the past year. "We’ve definitely gotten heavier," Finn notes, a sentiment echoed by the entire group. 'Vodka Shampoo' is a testament to their willingness to push boundaries and challenge their own expectations, creating music that’s as unpredictable as it is compelling.
Once the track’s final form was decided, the band headed to Orchard Studios in Wexford to lay it down. Working with Brendan, a seasoned producer who has been instrumental in shaping the sound of many Irish acts, the recording process was as smooth as it was enjoyable. "It went as smooth as it could have," Finn recalls, crediting Brendan and his two dogs for making the studio atmosphere relaxed and creative.
The recording captures the raw energy and intricate dynamics that have come to define Pants On Fire’s live performances, giving listeners a taste of what the band is truly capable of. It’s a sound that’s markedly different from their previous work—a bold step forward that hints at even more exciting things to come.
For Pants On Fire, 'Vodka Shampoo' represents more than just a song. It’s a statement of intent, a reflection of their journey, and a celebration of where they are now. With a new lineup, a refreshed sound, and a burning passion for their craft, the band is poised to make an indelible mark on the indie-Irish music scene.
