REVIEW: Mungbean - 'I Love You Say It Back'

Established back in 2016, the self recorded, produced, and managed Ohio-based new wave outfit Mungbean have unveiled their highly-anticipated debut album ‘I Love You Say It Back’. Having created an idiosyncratic sound that effortlessly blends together aspects of indie-rock, pop,and disco. Such a blend has resulted in a rock ‘n’ roll take on the 90s shoegaze scene, all the while remaining entirely modern and memorable.

With their distinct sound long established, Mungbean have compiled a collection of 10 genre-bending tracks, led by title track “I Love You Say It Back” is fronted by delicate synths before evolving into an indie-funk hybrid. Their most recent single, “Slow Motion”, is an ethereal and dreamlike track that has its roots firmly in the world of lo-fi music. ‘I Love You Say It Back’ is a full body listening experience that features dynamic and transcendental soundscapes and exquisite storytelling.

Mungbean on the inspiration behind ‘I Love You Say It Back’:

“‘I Love You Say It Back’ feels like our coming of age story. These songs have been written, played, rewritten, hashed out and recorded over the last few years. We've seen a lot of changes and challenges, not just as musicians but as young people growing up and figuring ourselves out. So when you listen to ILYSIB those are the kinds of stories being told – stories from a bunch of barely grown up kids, writing songs to get us through some of the crazier times in our lives.”
