Norwich-based rapper and producer $ebbuku, the brainchild of Sebastian Bates, returns with a radiant new single, 'Jackanory'. Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed Affray EP, the track continues to showcase his inventive approach to production and live instrumentation.
Written in collaboration with producer ALINA, Jackanory brings together a soundscape of detuned piano, saxophone, and crunchy, swing-heavy beats—an auditory blend that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly forward-thinking. The track opens with an irresistibly catchy chorus, highlighted by tasteful scratches and vocal cuts, immediately setting the tone for what follows. $ebbuku seamlessly transitions from melodic hooks to his signature laid-back yet angsty flow, capturing a balance of introspection and swagger. The single draws from the old-school hip-hop influences that have shaped $ebbuku's style, but also channels a biting post-punk edge that made his earlier work stand out.
Speaking about the track, Bates shared: “Jackanory is my take on letting go of the past and not letting old stories define you. I speak about my time living in Norwich, the pressures of wanting to elevate my craft, and the toll that took on me. It’s like I’m questioning myself: Am I ready to take the steps I need to grow, both as an artist and as a young man?”
Despite its introspective themes, Jackanory retains a playful, lighthearted energy. Bates’ humor shines through, particularly in the stories of wild band antics. One standout moment, captured in the track, comes from a rehearsal video where a coin flip leads to laughter and chaos. “That rehearsal holds a special place in my heart,” Bates adds. “It’s a reminder that deep, joyful connections with others can push you forward in ways isolation never could.”
