After two decades fronting one of South Africa’s most celebrated rock exports, Ross Learmonth is firmly carving out his own path...

Formerly the unmistakable voice of Prime Circle, Ross has spent the past few years redefining his sound, reconnecting with songwriting on a deeply personal level—and in the process, reminding us why his music continues to transcend borders.

His latest single, ‘Opposites’, has been climbing charts across South Africa since its release just over a month ago, already securing spots on major radio stations and Apple playlists; It follows the success of ‘Honey’ and ‘Because of You’, both Top 40 staples that cement Ross’s reinvention as more than a solo act—it’s a reinvigoration.

Built around bold hooks, warm synth textures and a rhythmic pulse that sways between indie-pop and modern rock, ‘Opposites’ explores the tension and charm of unlikely chemistry.

“The song was loosely inspired by my parents' relationship, and my own experiences in love and life,” Ross explains. “Sometimes, someone might be perfect for you in all the opposite ways you expected.”

The track was written in what Ross describes as a moment of creative flow—“It was in the room, and it wanted to be written”—with long-time collaborators Rusti Rossouw and Tristan Carmichael (based in the UK) helping to sculpt its glossy, emotive finish.

The track features Ross’s trademark vocal grit layered with acoustic and electric guitar, piano, synth, bass, and driving percussion. The result is a sound that fans of Hozier, Jeremy Loops, Imagine Dragons and even Harry Styles will feel right at home with—earnest but never heavy-handed, melodic yet full of punch.

Ross’s 2025 is already off to a storming start. In January, he performed at Cape Town’s iconic Kirstenbosch Gardens alongside Mafikizolo, followed by a feature set at RMB Starlight Classics in February. Just last month, he opened for The Goo Goo Dolls on their South African tour—an experience Ross describes as a full-circle moment, having shared a stage with the band during a 46664 concert years ago.

From chart success to soul-searching songwriting, Ross Learmonth is stepping confidently into a new era—proof that opposites don’t just attract, they can inspire something entirely new.
