Rumia is just gearing up for her sophomore album, Old Enough to Save Myself, set for release on April 4th. But just last Friday, she's graced us with her last single before the album, 'Role Model'.
The song arrives with a music video, which you can watch below:
Just in time for the spring, ‘Role Model’ brings us further into Rumia’s sonic world. Where lush soundscapes of airy guitar and buoyant production spiral into the song’s reflective message. The new single sees Rumia reflect on a relationship she used to have with someone, who had been a source of creative inspiration to her since childhood.
On the track, she shares, “The song speaks to the moment when the pedestal crumbles–when we understand that the expectations placed on someone can turn into wounds, and that healing requires accepting reality and moving forward.”
The song’s narrative unfolds through Rumia’s arresting storytelling, she reflects, “it took some therapy for me to take you off the pedestal” and “you put me in the big box with the tag ‘some things I leave behind’” – candidly capturing the pain of feeling ignored by someone who you once held in high regard. Where her last single, ‘Shift in the Air’, provided a moody ambience laid beneath hypothetical storytelling, this single adopts a pop sound, with clean production bolstering arresting lyricism.
Ahead of the album release, Rumia is set for a busy few weeks: from live shows, TV appearances, and radio slots, Rumia has already garnered notable appraise from the likes of Sofar Sounds, Fame, Earmilk, Sterofox and RTVE Spain. Drawing from her Spanish and Portuguese heritage, Rumia is always looking for her next creative push. Now based in Berlin, Rumia credits the local music scene as the root of her artistic evolution: delving into complex musical compositions, her music continues to embrace synthetic and electronic textures while retaining organic essences of raw instrumentation.
Her debut album Forget Me Not in 2022 garnered praise from the likes of Earmilk and Fame Magazine. She was also the winner of Best Original Song at the International Music Video Awards in Budapest, and won two awards for Best Original Song and Best Lyricism at the Art Film & Music Video Awards in London. Currently splitting her time between Berlin and Madrid, Rumia is gearing up for her new project, slated for release in the coming months. Old Enough to Save Myself is slated for release on April 4th, and promises a lush soundscape of musical exploration and rich textures, an exciting next chapter of her musical journey.
