Rumia returns with transcendent new single, ‘Shift in the Air’, delving into lyrical storytelling

Min

Rumia is beginning her 2025 with a bang, releasing her latest single, ‘Shift in the Air’ today.

Driving forth with glittering electric guitar riffs, ‘Shift in the Air’ shines in its departure from traditional lyrical storytelling. The track was born from a creative collaboration with fellow writers Charlotte Kohn and Daria Kickler. It was originally an exercise in songwriting, but Rumia knew the track was set to be something special.

The single traces a hypothetical narrative, allowing its protagonist to delve into curiosity, thought and memory. The premise is this: the protagonist of ‘Shift in the Air’ is trapped in a simulation, realising their loved ones have disappeared from reality. The track sees this character walking home, noticing subtle yet disturbing changes on this well-worn journey – the book they read on the bus is no longer the same, their favourite restaurant now stands as a model airplane store. As the familiar landscape becomes increasingly alien, the song crescendoes to its climax, leaving its end up to interpretation with the question, Will their loved ones still be there when they get home?

On the track, Rumia shares, “I think this song has my favorite lyrics ever written by me. I love the story and the specifics of places like the Japanese restaurant or the name of the books.”

Rumia has already garnered notable appraise from the likes of Sofar Sounds, Earmilk, Sterofox and RTVE Spain. Drawing from her Spanish and Portuguese heritage, Rumia is always looking for her next creative push. Now based in Berlin, Rumia credits the local music scene as the root of her artistic evolution: delving into complex musical compositions, her music continues to embrace synthetic and electronic textures while retaining organic essences of raw instrumentation.

Her debut album Forget Me Not in 2022 garnered praise from the likes of Earmilk and Fame Magazine. She was also the winner of Best Original Song at the International Music Video Awards in Budapest, and won two awards for Best Original Song and Best Lyricism at the Art Film & Music Video Awards in London. Currently splitting her time between Berlin and Madrid, Rumia is meticulously working on her new project, slated for release this spring. Her second record promises a lush soundscape of musical exploration and rich textures, an exciting next chapter of her musical journey.
