Bristol-based artist Dave Huntriss, known for his Runner Up moniker, closes out an impressive debut year with 'Departure Fever', a full-length album that deepens his exploration of indie-rock, infused with expansive soundscapes. Building on the momentum of earlier releases like 'Curriculum Vitae' and 'Let’s Go To London', Huntriss uses this record to cement his innovative approach, blending atmospheric layers with a sense of uplifting urgency.

From the very start, 'Departure Fever' sets a tone that’s both grand and immersive. Opening with the stunning 'Silver Medal', the album kicks off with a driving energy that showcases Huntriss’s ability to balance anthemic qualities with intricate sonic details. As the album progresses, tracks like 'New Year Waltz' offer a softer, more contemplative contrast, allowing his dynamic range to shine. Each song feels meticulously crafted yet effortlessly fluid, pulling the listener through waves of euphoria and introspection.

What makes 'Departure Fever' stand out is its dedication to pushing the boundaries of indie-rock. Huntriss’s layered production, combined with his deft songwriting, creates a lush auditory experience. The record pulses with a sense of forward motion, constantly evolving while maintaining a cohesive identity. Runner Up’s ability to oscillate between expansive, soaring highs and delicate, emotive lows highlights a maturity that’s rarely found in a debut.

Though Runner Up is still a fresh name on the scene, 'Departure Fever' feels like a declaration of intent. It’s a vibrant collection that promises more innovation to come, suggesting that Huntriss’s journey as a multi-instrumentalist and producer is only beginning.
