Sofia Menguita is one of Australia’s finest folk-pop exports. Blending emotional home truths and evocative guitar lines, she has slowly emerged as one of the most intrinsic and powerful artists on the scene right now. Following a busy summer gigging, recording and writing, she returns to the limelight with the release of her new EP Growing Pains.
Starting with the powerful ‘Dad Song', Sofia has a compelling knack for dealing with difficult subjects in such a beautiful and delicate way. Throughout the five-track effort lies her trademark gentle delivery, breathing a sense of life into the recordings that present them with just the right amount of craftsmanship, beauty and creativity. Her defiant emotional maturity is akin to that of Nick Drake, with songs like ‘Puddle Jumping’ and ‘I’ve’ possessing the contemporary magic that's often found in the works of Clairo and Pheobe Bridgers. Is it lo-fi? Is it hi-fi? I'm not one to say - all I know is that it's absolutely breath taking.
Commenting on the release, she explains, “This record was written about navigating through relationships and adversity as a young, father-less, teenage girl. It is a re-introduction to the music scene, authentic to who I am and how I feel. I was inspired by the production of Pinegrove's "Skylight", and the delicate-ness of "Sling" by Clairo. I had the pleasure of working on it with my partner, Matthew Burgess, who also produced the single "Everyone I've Ever Loved". He understood and took care of my vision, so it's safe to say that this is my favourite project to date”.
