South London’s music scene welcomes a fresh new sound as Little Egret bursts onto the scene with their debut single ‘The Balance’, released on March 15th. Characterized by hooky guitar riffs, driving Motown-influenced drums, subtle synths, and earworm vocal melodies, the band captures a sound reminiscent of the 90s-00s era Brit-pop and indie, all in one electrifying package.
Produced by the acclaimed Brett Shaw, known for his work with Gorillaz, Mura Masa, Foals, and Florence and the Machine, ‘The Balance’ offers a strikingly complete sound despite being the band’s debut. Bouncing and vibrant, the track encapsulates a euphoric feel-good tone while also displaying a sense of urgency and directness through the vocal performance.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind ‘The Balance’, Little Egret shared their creative process, stating, "When we were playing the song instrumentally, the little pre-chorus, the ‘I don’t want to suppress it’ came really easy and just fit well with the build of the music. It led pretty naturally to the idea that I had emotions that I wanted to express but felt like I maybe couldn’t. For a while, I had the song’s working title as PDA-ok in my notes - because it was inspired by a night out with my boyfriend and some other friends where they joked we were being too couple-y and in love. So when I told the band that idea, they got the vibe completely and we worked on bringing it all together."
Their musical experimentation shines through as they blend earnest and energetic early noughties rock with modern synth-jazz elements. Starting with an old Motown-influenced drum beat and washed-out opening guitar chords, they filled the track with hotwired guitar riffs, synth whooshes, and layers of echoes and delays. Little Egret didn't stop there; they infused the track with samples of laughter and moments of camaraderie from their writing sessions to ensure that their sense of fun shone through in the final product.
Having honed their skills with electrifying performances at venues such as the Bedford, Amersham Arms, and a sold-out show at Servant Jazz Quarters in 2023, Little Egret is poised to carve a niche for themselves in the vibrant tapestry of South London's music scene. With ‘The Balance’ serving as their bold introduction, the future looks promising for this dynamic new band.
